About Rodrigues


Rodrigues

 

The island is about 560kms almost East of Mauritius. Maximum distances, from Pointe Cotton in the East to Pointe Mapou in the West is about 18km, while maximum distance, from Jantac in the North to Pointe Poursuite in the South is about 8km. The island is about 108km square.

The population of the island was estimated to be 37,000 as at mid-year 2001, 95% of the population is of Roman Catholic faith.

About Rodrigues

Before Mauritius became an independent nation on 12 March 1968, Rodrigues was considered a dependency of Mauritius. Under the new constitution Rodrigues is now part of Mauritius. The only year-round practical harbour of Rodrigues is Port Mathurin in the north of rodrigues. The airport of Rodrigues is situated at Pointe l'Herbe, Plaine Corail in the South Western part of the island.

Rodrigues is administrated by an Island Secretary who reports to the Ministry for Rodrigues.


Economy

Fishing and animal rearing are the main economic activities. With the recent surge in tourism activity, the Rodriguans have become increasingly aware of the economic importance of their local crafts. A wide variety of handicraft goods are now available to tourists.
